Received from Joev Dubach, son of our classmate, Mark Dubach

Sat, Dec 4 at 6:41 PM

I’m sorry to have to tell you that my Dad Mark Dubach passed away late Wednesday night / early Thursday morning. We're planning a celebration of his life in the afternoon/evening of Friday, December 10, at Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Church in Shoreline, WA, and hope to make that both in-person and with a Zoom option. More details will follow as the plan firms up. There will also be a brief ceremony for close family and friends at 1pm at his graveside in Snohomish, WA.

The regular Sunday service tomorrow at 10:30am will also have a very brief remembrance and candle-lighting during joys and sorrows (on the order of a minute), and some family members will be in attendance. There's a description of how services are working these days at https://www.shorelineuu.org/ , but the highlights I'd point out for in-person attendees are that masks are recommended regardless of vaccination status, and that there's a link to RSVP for yourself or your group for contact-tracing purposes. There'll also be a Zoom option:

I remember Mark coming to our 50th reunion,  his longtime friend Carol Leonard being there as well in part to get together with Mark. It was good to see him even though it was clear that he was already struggling with a long-term illness.

My first response to the news was, 'Oh no! Not Mark! Not  still another classmate in such a short time.' Mark was definitely one of my 'bros' though that term did not exist then. Bill Newman, Mark and I did things together. We hung out at reunions.
To Mark's family:  I share your grief, though not with the same intimacy a son or partner feels. Long distance comforting is not that effective in soothing grief. Yet the tears I weep now come from the same source and tighten my throat. Know that there are many others, like me, who grieve with you.
With love, Bill Buchholz

It is a great sorrow to learn of dear Mark's
passing: our valedictorian; baseball enthusiast
and athlete; a prince among men, humble and
always concerned for others; and the very model
of how the already-brightest are the most eager
to learn something new.  Wide perspectives that
underlay his researching a condition that later
afflicted him were seen early in an intriguing
science project (that 'went downstate' to
competition at UIUC) about Drop Weights.  How
can we thank you, Mark, for the grace of lifelong
friendship?  This has been a hard week indeed,
following upon the loss of our mutual friend
Ned Seeman.  Thank you, Joev, for allowing us
to join our grief and remembrance with yours.

Is there a zoom link for today’s celebration of life?

I have so many memories of dancing Argentine tango with Mark! We were both obsessed with the dance. He will be dearly missed.
