Ellen Katz (Block) writes:
I have sad news to convey.  Our class hosted two foreign exchange students our senior year through the American Field Service (AFS) program. .  Katsu Tsutsumi was from Japan and lived with Art Alschuler and his family.  Tania Waisman was from Rio de Janeiro and lived with me and my family.

Tania and our family stayed very very closed over the years.  My parents considered her a second daughter and there were several trips between Highland Park and Rio.  We made sure our children knew one another and were working on plans to get our grandchildren together.  I am heartbroken to tell you and Tania's many friends in the class, that Tania passed away a few days ago.  She had had a stroke some months ago from which she never fully recovered and while there were some improvements, she suddenly took a turn for the worse.

Tania was an extremely intelligent, delightful, outgoing, courageous person and a welcome addition to our class. Though she was unable to come to our 50th reunion, she was able to come a few weeks later and met with a small group of high school friends.  The English she learned being with us never faltered over the years.  She even saw the tragic news about the Highland Park shooting on July 4th on TV in Rio and told her nurse that she had lived there.  The nurse didn't believe her but her son happened to be visiting her at that time and assured the nurse it was true.

When I talked to Tania just a few weeks ago, we had a very coherent conversation with much reminiscing.  I will miss her a lot.

Oh Ellen, what a loss for you. I remember seeing her when she came in. Time is fleeting & we need to embrace life & find the joy.
