Teacher and sculptor, Nicholas G. Prokos, of 1698 1st Street, a 55-year resident of Highland Park, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2015 at Highland Park Hospital. Mr. Prokos was born May 17, 1934 in Escanaba, Michigan. He was the fourth son of Greek immigrants, George and Koula Prokos.
Mr. Prokos taught at HPHS beginning in 1961. Our classmates may have taken classes from him as juniors or seniors.
Mr. Prokos lived down the street from my family. We lived in an old Victorian house. One day Mr. Prokos rang the bell and handed my mom a stone cherub and told her it would look better at our house than his. It's been moved many times since then and is a bit the worse for wear, but it's in my garden today. And I still have a ceramic vase that I made in one of the art classes he taught at HPHS. I think he had a dog named Binky - strange the things that come back! Nice man, fun teacher!
