Ned Seaman passed away last week.  He was a very very famous nanoscientist who won the Kavli prize

At our 50th reunion, he met Barbara Lipski as they both lived in New York and they got married.

Please see below from Barb’s brother

Dear Friends, Family and Colleagues of Ned,

It is with great sadness that I share with you that Ned passed away last night, with Barbara by his side.

While we are all grieving over this news, we celebrate Ned’s life – including his remarkable accomplishments and contributions to NYU and his field. He was loved by so many people.  A memorial service is being planned, and we will share the details once it has been scheduled.

With warm regards,

Donald Lipski

Ned was a very talented individual. I was in the Advanced Placement classes (Algebra in 8th grade, Biology as freshmen, etc.) but Ned was way ahead of me.

Here are some links about his remarkable life:

Deeply saddened to see news of the passing of Ned Seaman who I counted as a close friend back in the day.  We were together in most of our classes, and I used to count on him as one of the fellows who would get together for extracurricular activities.  I remember going over to his house on Lake-Cook to play chess with him and having a deuce of a time competing.  A brilliant star has passed on.  My condolences to all who loved him.

Ned was a friend of mine and I paused to remember how he was important to me when I heard he had died. In most of my classes ( inc. John Broming's freshman biology which changed my life ), we were among the wonks who went on in science. His passing reminds me that he was one of far too many friends I did not stay connected with, all to my loss. At this time of life (most of us are 76 +/- we will be getting reminders of our own mortality. That forces me to recall how precious relationships are, and how fragile.

Not neglecting his well-earned and
rightly-memorialized achievements,
Ned shall forever remain to us many
as quite simply a kindly, decent,
and honorable man of the highest
character, equally a pleasure and
an honor to know.  Reunions and
correspondence reconstituted,
memorably and meaningfully, talks
begun in homeroom, which he had left
after three years for the University
of Chicago.  Barb, Donald, and all,
be certain that we many hold Ned and
you dear in our hearts and thoughts.

I didn't know Ned well in high school.  However, in Braeside and Edgewood, because he lived on Lake Cook Rd about 2 blocks from me, and our mothers knew each other (I think from ORT), we used to play ping pong in his basement. I remember having some good laughs with him.  We talked about those times at our 50th reunion.  Gerry had told me he was ill and I'm so sorry to hear about his death.  Our condolences to Barb and his family.

I was saddened to hear of Ned's passing.  Like many others, a close friendship in high school often ends as we move around the country and I didn't reconnect with Ned until our 50th reunion where we sat together and talked about our lives.  I was particularly struck when I returned to the table after a too long conversation at the bar and noted that he included my wife Doris in the conversational circle.  I was very happy to know that he connected with Barb and very proud to know of his many scholarly accomplishments.  A great guy who will be missed.

I was so happy to see Ned and Barbara together at the last reunion.  Their match up was a very romantic story and I am very glad they had these last years together.

Of course been thinking about Highland Park lately.
No words...

Also realize that I never sent links to Ned's memorial celebration.
It was a true celebration of his life, a real outpouring of love, sadness mixed with humor.  Even for those who knew him well, his life’s story became richer.

For those of you who would like to see it, here is a link to NYU which has links to many sites about Ned. Scroll down to see the last ones for links to this celebration.
Another of the links I like is for the video they showed when he won the Franklin Award. It talks about Ned being a 'Sputnik kid' something we can all relate to, and explains his work.

Hope that some of you will want to see these. Here's the NYU link:

Best to Everyone!
