Angelika Marie “Angie” Brandl, age 79, of Long Grove, IL formerly of Highwood, Northbrook and Sun City West, AZ, passed away on July 14, 2022. Beloved wife of John H. Brandl; loving mother of John (Lynn) and Ann Brandl; cherished Oma of Jack and Sam.
Angie was born in Stuttgart, Germany, the daughter of Willie Brucker and Anna Abele. She grew up in and around the area of Schwabisch Gmund, where her family ran The Rose Gasthaus. As a young girl, she was sponsored by the Tolstoy Foundation to emigrate to the United States, coming to live in Highwood. She traveled back and forth to Germany often, as she greatly loved her many relatives who were so important in her life.
One evening, fresh off of a trip back from Germany, Angie stopped into the Mary Jane Lanes in Highwood. That same night, a young man named John H. Brandl happened to be home on leave from the Army, and also decided to stop in to bowl a few games. The rest, as Opa says, is history. John and Angie were married 56 years. In that time, life came full circle as they purchased and reopened that bowling alley, renamed Highwood Lanes, which they operated along with the help of their children Ann and JB for many years.
Angie will be remembered as an amazing wife, mother and Oma. She was always ready for an adventure, especially when it came to Oma Days with her young grandsons back in the day. Kind, loving, funny, fun-loving, loyal, resilient and tough – it took a lot to shake Angie.
