How about telling stories about teachers? For instance, Mrs. Cardinal, as my homeroom teacher, was so completely loving and supportive. And I think it was Ms. Morgan who was such a supportive english teacher. And Mr. Haberman (?) in Chorus. Â But Ms. Haddie and Ms. Lill once took me aside, as a cheerleader, and totally blasted me for....wanting to belong with the others, not fulfilling their agenda??? Hard to say, but it was frightening. And Mr. Guthrie similarly seemed to go off the deep end, again endangering my being a cheerleader by threatening to fail me in English --- what did I do?!!! Think a 'deal' table in a poem meant card dealing instead of a kind of wood?!!! Hello!!!
Oh my goodness, maybe I am being too honest and blunt here...if so, just ignore this strand!!!
Feel embarrassed to have been so grumbly here, but I have heard back channel from some people who had similar experiences. I guess I just needed to know I wasn't the only one.
Have to say that several people at Ricky's Philosopher's Cafe gave Mr. Guthrie credit for making them readers and thinkers and way ahead of others in English lit when they got to college. And looking at my old papers (anyone else save all their old papers?), I did end up with A's and a very positive note from Mr. G in my yearbook...
Ms. Haddy was great to me and I even had to be off the squad due to a bad grade in history. Broke my heart but she helped me realize it wasn't the end of the world. AND IT WASN't!!! Larry gave me a couple addresses to contact her but no response.
Miss Roberta Shine was my hero in high school as my counselor. She gave me the courage to follow my dream and become a teacher. I had 37 wonderful years of teaching first grade in PA.
I also remember an English teacher who was new but really quite good as I read and wrote a lot in his class. My friends and I were late quite a bit and one day he told us to try rolling skating to class!!! And we did!!! I think his name was Mr. Skranka.
Skranka's English class - Marji Stark and Jo Ann MacMillan came from the music department and Skranka, who was about as strange as they come, yelled at them and told JoAnn she should get roller skates and told Marji she belonged in a monkey cage. Â Next day, bell rang, no Jo Ann, no Marji, all of a sudden there they were...Jo Ann on roller skates and asking Skranka if he'd every tried to climb stairs wearing roller skates and Marji with a cut-out poster board with 'monkey cage' written across the top. Â Miss Shine had seen them in the hall and laughed. Â It was, I believe, Skranka's second and last year at HPHS.
